Hockey Returns To Planet Ice Basingstoke

We’re thrilled to announce that Hockey Day is finally here! The Basingstoke Bison will take to the ice at Planet Ice Basingstoke on Saturday 18th October at 18:30, marking a long-awaited return for fans and players alike.

After overcoming a number of challenges, and following close consultation with the Bison team owners and our management team, we’ve made the decision to open the building in a way that prioritises what matters most: getting hockey back on the ice. Our focus has been on ensuring the pad is ready for competitive play and training, and we’re proud to deliver on that promise.

Heath Rhodes, Chief Operations Officer for Planet Ice, shared:
“We’re excited to welcome fans back for ice hockey this Saturday and hope everyone enjoys a fantastic first night in the building. While the aesthetics of the venue are still a work in progress, our priority has been functionality—making sure the rink is ready for the Bison and other ice users. We’re committed to supporting the community and won’t delay opening when we know the ice is ready.”

To help manage expectations, Planet Ice want to be transparent: the building is not yet in its final form, but they’re making steady progress. Food and drink will be available at both Little Frankies and the upstairs bar. Toilets will be accessible inside the rink, at the former Little Frankies, and via temporary facilities for Saturday’s game. At this stage, Little Frankies can be accessed from the rink only.

Steve Nell, MD of Basingstoke Bison stated ‘We are looking forward to getting back to home ice and delighted to bring the Bison back to Basingstoke. I’d like to thank everyone involved with the refurbishment for their hard work and support.’

Looking ahead, Planet Ice Basingstoke will open to the public for October Half Term from Friday 24th October through Monday 3rd November. Tickets can be purchased online at www.planet-ice.co.uk or by card at the rink reception. Skating lessons will also be available to book online this week, with courses starting from 1st November. Those who have already paid will be contacted shortly.

Heath Rhodes added:

“We’ll continue working on the venue in the lead-up to Half Term. While we know it may not meet everyone’s expectations just yet, reaching this stage is a significant milestone. We’ve always said we’d open for those who rely on the rink for training and hockey—and we’re proud to be delivering on that commitment. I have to thank our amazing team at Planet Ice who have been working weekends and late into the night to get to the stage we are at. Without them we would not be where we are currently.”

We appreciate your patience and support as we continue to improve the facility. Let’s make this return to the ice a celebration of community, resilience, and the sport we all love.
