In previous years each Planet Ice rink opens its doors on Christmas Day to local skaters free of charge. The session was introduced 7 years ago as a way of saying thank to their most loyal customers through the year. In year 1 each of the participating rinks managed to service around 50 skaters in a 2 hour session from 10am till 12pm. Over the years the popularity has increased to the point where 100’s were flocking online to get free passes for the Planet Ice festive freebie.
Chief Operations Officer for the Planet Ice brand, Heath Rhodes commented ‘The Christmas Day session had become really popular over the years and we felt the that the original ethos of putting something back to the community was being lost. After consultation with regular skaters, we decided that we would request a small donation on behalf of a local cause. We also decided that it didn’t have to be a large charity – in actual fact, we were focussed more on the smaller charities that probably do not get as much awareness as the higher profile charities’.
The outcome from this has been that collectively Planet Ice rinks have raised funds approaching nearly £12,000.00.
Heath continued ‘Everyone here at Planet Ice is delighted with the overall figure and hope it will make a change of some size or other with the local charities the rinks decided to support. We would like to extend our gratitude to those that skated Christmas Day and supported local causes plus the dedicated staff that came to work for those few hours. Planet Ice is very proud of this achievement and dedication to supporting our local communities and look forward to more fundraising into the future’.
